The Booking Is Just the Beginning | Goofy Getaways Podcast Episode 2.10
There's a moment in this episode where Amy Blades says something that could be printed on a business card: "the booking is just the beginning." If you've ever assumed a Travel Advisor's job ends the moment a trip is confirmed, this minisode is the one that corrects the record.
This is the second of three minisodes pulled from Episode 2.8, continuing the conversation between Amy Blades and Travel Advisors Amanda Worsley, Noddea Skidmore, and Aaron Guest.
In This Episode:
Meet the Advisors:
What Happens After a Trip Is Booked
Once a reservation is confirmed, advisors keep watching for better deals, spend hours on hold with vendors when a modification is needed, and remain the first call a client makes when something goes sideways. Amanda described the system she built for this: a dedicated folder and calendar for every client, with reminders for every deadline, so nothing falls through the cracks between booking and departure. As Amy put it, being an advisor means being an advocate on the client's behalf, and being the one people call when something goes wrong, not just the one who took the initial booking.
The Work Clients Never See
Some of the best moments in this minisode are the small, specific ones. Noddea described making sure a couple's exact anniversary date reached Disney Cruise Line's dining team, who then surprised the couple with something special a full night ahead of the actual date, on their own initiative. She also talked about quietly updating a new baby's name on a family's reservation the moment she spotted the announcement on social media, so the family never had to ask.
That sits on top of the constant, less visible work behind every trip: destination and supplier training, staying current on policies that can shift overnight, understanding exactly what a promotion does and doesn't cover, and learning new booking systems and CRMs as the agency grows. None of it shows up in a client's inbox. All of it is why the trip goes smoothly.
Why Firsthand Experience (and a Good Network) Matters
Amy and the team also got into something worth sitting with: a good advisor should genuinely know the destinations they're sending clients to, which means real, firsthand travel matters. But no one advisor can go everywhere, which is exactly why the team leans on each other. Noddea described reaching out to colleagues before her first Disneyland booking just to confirm she had the details right, and Amy talked about calling on an advisor's firsthand experience even when she hasn't been somewhere herself.
Just as important: the best advice isn't only the glowing kind. Noddea was candid about a can't-miss Disneyland dining spot that other agents love and she personally didn't, and why sharing that honestly, alongside what did work for her, helps a client make their own decision instead of just following the hype.
