We've all been there. You're scrolling through pictures of beautiful resorts, dreaming about your next cruise, or planning that long-awaited family vacation. You find something that looks perfect, the price seems right, and you're ready to book!
But here's something I've learned after more than 13 years in the travel industry: Just because a vacation looks perfect on paper doesn't mean it's going to be perfect for you.
And sometimes, the decisions we make before we even leave home can have the biggest impact on our vacation.
On our latest Goofy Getaways podcast, we talked about a few things that can ruin a vacationbefore it even begins. These are situations we've seen happen over the years, and the frustrating part is that many of them could have been avoided with a little more information and
Planning.
Let's talk about three of the biggest ones.
Booking the Cheapest Stateroom Isn't Always the Best Decision
I love a good deal just as much as anyone else. Who doesn't?
But when it comes to cruising, I always tell clients that the least expensive stateroom isn't necessarily the best value.
I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone say, "We're only going to sleep in the room anyway."
And you know what? For some people, that's absolutely true!
If you're the type of traveler who is up early, exploring the ship all day, and only returning to your room to shower and sleep, an interior stateroom might be perfect.
But what if you love sitting on your balcony with a cup of coffee in the morning? What if you're traveling with kids and need a little extra space? Or maybe you're a light sleeper and your room happens to be directly below a busy restaurant or entertainment venue.
Suddenly, that great deal might not feel so great.
One of the things I love about cruising is that there really is something for everyone. But not every stateroom is created equal, even within the same category.
Location, layout, noise, and even what's directly above or below your room can make a difference.
My advice? Don't book a stateroom simply because it's the cheapest option. Think about how you actually vacation and what's important to you.
Sometimes spending a little more is worth every penny. Other times, saving that money for an excursion or specialty dining makes perfect sense.
It's about making the right choice for YOU.
Nobody Wants to Vacation Next to a Construction Zone
Imagine arriving at a beautiful resort you've been dreaming about for months.
You've looked at all the pictures, planned your pool days, and already decided where you're having that first tropical drink.
Then you check in and discover the main pool is closed for renovations.
Wait...WHAT?
Or maybe you've booked a cruise and find out that an area of the ship you were really looking forward to isn't available.
Unfortunately, these things happen.
Resorts renovated. Cruise ships go through refurbishments. Theme parks close attractions for maintenance. It's all part of keeping these destinations updated and looking their best.
But that doesn't mean you want to spend your vacation listening to construction equipment or staring at a wall where a beautiful view was supposed to be.
And while not every closure or renovation can be predicted, many are announced well in advance.
This is one of those areas where doing your homework really matters.
At Goofy Getaways, we spend a lot of time staying informed about what's happening throughout the travel industry. We attend training, visit resorts, tour cruise ships, and work closely with our travel partners.
Why? Because those details matter to our clients.
If you're booking a resort because it has an amazing pool, you probably want to know if that pool will be open when you arrive!
My advice? Before booking, make sure you know what to expect during your travel dates.
And remember, those gorgeous resort pictures you're looking at online might not tell the entire story.
You're Supposed to Be Planning a Vacation, Not Taking on Another Job!
This one is probably the most relatable.
You decide it's time for a vacation. Everyone is excited, and you're ready to start planning.
Sounds fun, right?
Until you're three hours into researching resorts, comparing room categories, reading hundreds of reviews, checking flight schedules, and trying to figure out which destination everyone in the family will actually agree on.
Then come the dining reservations, excursions, transportation, travel documents, and cancellation policies.
And let's not even get started on trying to coordinate everyone's schedules!
Before you know it, planning your relaxing vacation has become one more thing on your already very long to-do list.
Here's the thing. I absolutely LOVE planning vacations. I've built a business around it!
But I also know that most people don't have the time, energy, or desire to spend hours researching every little detail.
And that's okay.
I think sometimes people forget that a Travel Advisor does so much more than make a reservation.
We listen. We ask questions. We help you narrow down the options. We explain the differencesbetween resorts, cruise ships, and destinations. And we help you make decisions based on what matters most to you.
We're also there when questions come up or plans change.
Does that mean every vacation will go exactly as planned? Of course not. Travel can be unpredictable, and sometimes things happen that are completely outside anyone's control.
But having someone who understands the industry and knows how to help can make those situations a lot less stressful.
My advice? Don't let the planning process take all the fun out of your vacation before it even begins.
You have enough going on in your everyday life. Your vacation shouldn't feel like another full-time job.
So, What's the Secret to a Great Vacation?
I wish I could tell you there was one magical formula for planning the perfect vacation.
After all, we are Goofy Getaways!
But the truth is, what makes a vacation amazing for one person might be completely different for someone else.
Some people want adventure from morning until night. Others want a beautiful beach, a comfortable lounge chair, and absolutely nothing on their schedule.
Some families love the excitement of a Disney vacation, while others would much rather spend a week sailing through the Caribbean.
And that's what makes travel so wonderful.
There isn't one right way to vacation.
But there IS a right way to plan for the experience you're hoping to have.
After more than 15 years of helping people travel, one thing I know for certain is that the little details can make a big difference.
It's not always about finding the cheapest price or booking the fanciest resort.
It's about understanding what you're getting, knowing what to expect, and making sure your vacation fits your family, your budget, and your expectations.
Because at the end of the day, you're investing more than money into your vacation. You're investing your time, creating memories, and hopefully getting a much-needed break from everyday life.
And I think that's worth doing right.
