Port Orleans French Quarter: Disney’s Most Underrated Gem
I’ve stayed at nearly every Walt Disney World Resort over the years — from deluxe to value, big and small — and yet there’s one moderate resort I find myself returning to again and again:
Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter.
It’s charming. It’s peaceful. It’s full of personality. And in my opinion? It’s one of the most underrated properties on Disney property.
Small But Mighty
What makes the French Quarter so special? For starters, it’s the smallest moderate resort, which means everything is close. No 10-minute hikes to the lobby, food court, or bus stop — it’s all right there. Whether you’re traveling with little ones, older family members, or just appreciate convenience (who doesn’t?), that layout is a game-changer.
The moment you arrive, you’re transported into the heart of New Orleans — complete with gas lamps, wrought iron balconies, and jazz music playing softly in the background. It’s got that storybook Disney feel, without being over-the-top. The theming is incredible, spot on.
Rooms That Are Comfortable & Charming
The rooms here are fresh, clean, and filled with charming touches; they were recently updated — from Princess and the Frog-inspired artwork to Mardi Gras colors and fleur-de-lis accents. They’re 314 square feet (a bit roomier than some value resorts) and sleep four comfortably.
I’ve found them to be quiet and cozy, and thanks to the resort's small size, you're never far from the pool, food, or transportation.
Food Worth Talking About
Let’s talk about food — because if you know me, you know that matters!
The Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory isn’t your typical food court. Yes, you’ll find Disney staples (Mickey waffles, burgers, flatbreads), but they also lean into their New Orleans theme. Jambalaya, shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes — it's all there, and it’s actually
good. I love that Disney really wants to cultivate the feeling of authenticity in everything they do.
They make sure everything lines up with whichever themed resort you are at, food, rooms, landscaping, all of it.
Ok, lets get really honest, the real star of the show? THE BEIGNETS. Soft, pillowy, powdered-sugar-covered perfection. You can find them at Scat Cat’s Club Café, and I promise, they’re worth the hype — perfect snack or breakfast treat. Always hot and ready which I love, they are made to order...perfection!
Pool Time, New Orleans Style
The Doubloon Lagoon pool is a family favorite. With its giant sea serpent slide (yes, it’s a thing!) and whimsical Mardi Gras vibe, it’s fun without being chaotic. There’s a splash play area for little ones, a hot tub for adults, and plenty of loungers if you just want to soak up the Florida sun.
What I love most is that it feels relaxed and easygoing — never overcrowded or overwhelming, even during busier seasons. The pool was recently updated which is nice, the colors are bright and the theme from the resort to the pool is flawless.
Transportation Made Easy
Getting around is surprisingly smooth for such a quaint resort. You’ll find:
One single bus stop that serves the entire resort (no long loops!)
Boat transportation to Disney Springs — and it’s one of the most peaceful, scenic rides you can take on property. I highly recommend doing it at night!
No Skyliner or monorail here, but the efficiency of the buses and the laid-back boat ride more than make up for it. Insider tip - always give yourself at least an hour of travel time if you have a specific time you need to get somewhere, while transportation is pretty easy the timing can at times fall short. I have waited 5 minutes for a bus and I have just missed the bus I need and have to wait 20 minutes, just go in knowing that you may have to wait and plan accordingly.
Why It Deserves More Love
Look, I get the appeal of big-name deluxe resorts — the proximity, the fancy restaurants, the over-the-top theming. But the French Quarter has something those can’t always offer: charm, quiet, and soul.
It feels like a tucked-away secret, where the pace is slower, the vibes are warmer, and the magic is just as real.
It's the kind of place where:
You can enjoy coffee by the river before the parks
Your kids can splash in the pool without it feeling like a theme park
You can end your night with beignets and jazz instead of chaos
Final Thoughts
If you’ve never stayed at Port Orleans French Quarter, I’m telling you — it’s time. Whether it’s your first trip or your fifteenth, this resort has a way of stealing hearts. I send a lot of clients here, and the feedback is always the same:
“How did I not know about this place before?”
That’s the thing — once you know, you know. And once you stay... you’ll want to come back.
