The Truth About Pricing, Promotions, and Price Increases | Goofy Getaways Podcast Episode 2.7

One of the biggest questions travelers ask when planning a vacation is:

Should I wait for a deal?

It’s easy to assume that if you wait long enough, a promotion will eventually come along and you'll get a better price. But vacation pricing is a little more complicated than that.

In this mini-episode of the Goofy Getaways Podcast, Amy Blades and the Goofy Getaways team take a closer look at how vacation pricing, promotions, and price increases actually work — and why waiting for a deal isn't always the best strategy.

The goal isn't to scare you into booking early or convince you that every vacation will become more expensive. It's about understanding how pricing and availability work together so you can make a more informed decision.

Why Do Vacation Promotions Exist?

When a promotion is released, it's easy to think, "This is my chance to get a cheaper vacation!"

And sometimes, it absolutely is.

But promotions are also designed to help travel suppliers fill inventory. That might mean unsold hotel rooms, cruise cabins, or availability during periods when demand is lower.

Understanding why a promotion exists can help put those deals into perspective.

A promotion doesn't necessarily mean that every room or cabin is going to be discounted — or that waiting for that promotion will result in a lower price than what was available when you first started looking.

Why Waiting Can Backfire

Here's where things get tricky.

The room or cabin you actually want might:

  • Sell out before a promotion is released

  • No longer be available for your travel dates

  • Be excluded from a particular promotion

  • Become more expensive as overall inventory decreases

You might eventually find a deal, but it may not be a deal on the vacation you originally wanted.

That's why the question isn't simply, "Did I get a discount?"

It's also:

"What did I have to give up to get that discount?"

Booking Early Gives You Options

One of the biggest advantages of booking early is having more choices.

Depending on the destination, booking ahead can allow you to:

  • Choose from more room or cabin categories

  • Have a wider range of travel dates

  • Select popular itineraries before they fill

  • Lock in available pricing

  • Monitor promotions after you've booked

In many situations, if an eligible promotion becomes available later, there may be an opportunity to apply it to an existing reservation or compare the new pricing against your original booking.

The exact rules vary by destination and promotion, which is one reason having someone who understands the details can be helpful.

What About Price Increases?

Vacation pricing isn't necessarily static.

Prices can change throughout the year based on factors like demand, remaining inventory, travel dates, and new pricing structures.

That means the price you see today isn't always the price you'll see six months from now.

This doesn't mean that prices will always increase or that you should panic and book immediately. Some vacations offer more last-minute opportunities than others, and there are plenty of situations where waiting can make sense.

The important thing is understanding the destination you're considering and how its pricing and availability tend to behave.

The Best Price Isn't Always the Best Value

This is one of the biggest takeaways from the conversation.

Finding the lowest possible number isn't necessarily the same thing as getting the best value.

A slightly more expensive room in the location you really wanted may be a better value than a heavily discounted room that requires compromises you're not happy with.

The same is true for cruises, flights, travel dates, and other vacation decisions.

The goal isn't simply to find the lowest price. It's to find the best value for the experience you actually want.

So, Should You Book Early or Wait?

There isn't a universal answer.

Some destinations and travel periods reward early planning. Others may offer more last-minute opportunities. Sometimes waiting works beautifully. Other times, waiting means losing access to the exact vacation you wanted.

The key is knowing what you're comfortable trading for the possibility of a lower price.

Before you decide to wait for a deal, consider:

  • How flexible are your dates?

  • How important is your specific resort or room category?

  • Are you willing to take whatever inventory is left?

  • How much would a price increase affect your budget?

  • Is saving money more important than having your first-choice experience?

When you look at the whole picture, it becomes much easier to make a decision based on value instead of simply chasing a discount.
