What I Wish Someone Told Me Before Planning a Trip to Universal Orlando

If I'm being completely honest, I thought planning a trip to Universal Orlando would be easy.

I had visited theme parks before. I assumed I could show up, ride some attractions, and figure things out as I went.

I was wrong.

Don't get me wrong—I absolutely love Universal Orlando. The attractions are incredible, the resorts are beautiful, and there is something special about stepping into places like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter or experiencing the Epic Universe. But there are definitely things I wish someone had told me before my first trip.

So, if you're planning your own Universal vacation, here are the top ten things I wish someone had told me.

1. Universal Isn't "Disney Lite"

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that Universal is simply Disney's smaller cousin.

It's not.

Universal has its own personality, atmosphere, and fan base. The rides are generally more thrilling, the pace feels different, and the experience appeals to a wide variety of travelers—not just families with young children.

Treat it like its own destination, because it absolutely deserves that.

2. Park-to-Park Tickets Matter More Than You Think

I know it can be tempting to save money and purchase one-park-per-day tickets.

But here's the catch:

You cannot ride the Hogwarts Express unless you have Park-to-Park tickets.

And trust me—riding the train between Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade is part of the experience.

This is one place where spending a little more often creates a much better vacation.

3. Staying Onsite Changes Everything

Before my first visit, I didn't fully understand why people recommended Universal resorts so strongly.

Now I do.

Early Park Admission, convenient transportation, walking paths, and the overall ease of staying close to the parks make a huge difference.

And if you're staying at select Premier Resorts, Express Pass Unlimited is included—a benefit that can save families hundreds of dollars.

4. Express Pass Isn't Included for Everyone

This one surprises people all the time.

Unlike Genie+ used to be at Disney, Universal Express Pass is a separate purchase—and it can be expensive.

Many guests assume it's automatically included with their vacation package.

It's not.

Knowing this ahead of time helps you budget properly and decide whether it's worth the investment for your family.

5. The Rides Are More Intense Than You Might Expect

Universal is known for thrills.

If someone in your family struggles with motion sickness, has sensory concerns, or simply doesn't enjoy big attractions, it's important to plan accordingly.

Not every ride is a roller coaster, but many attractions use screens, motion simulation, and more intense ride systems than guests sometimes expect.

6. You Will Walk. A Lot.

And then you'll walk some more.

Comfortable shoes are not optional.

I know they're not the cutest thing in your suitcase, but your feet will thank you later.

Trust me on this one.

7. Don't Skip the Shows

It's easy to focus only on rides, but some of my favorite memories at Universal have come from slowing down and enjoying the entertainment.

Shows provide a break from the heat, a chance to rest your feet, and often become unexpected highlights of the trip.

8. The Food Is Better Than I Expected

I wasn't expecting to talk about theme park food, but here we are.

Universal has stepped up its dining game in a big way.

From Butterbeer and themed treats to incredible resort restaurants and CityWalk favorites, some of our favorite vacation meals have happened outside the attractions themselves.

Come hungry.

9. A "Quick Trip" Usually Isn't Enough

People often tell me they only need two days.

Sometimes that's true.

But with multiple parks, Volcano Bay, resort time, CityWalk, and now Epic Universe, many families discover they wish they had given themselves an extra day or two.

Vacations are much more enjoyable when you don't feel rushed.

10. Planning Ahead Makes a Huge Difference

Can you wing it?

Of course.

But Universal vacations become so much more enjoyable when you understand ticket options, Express Pass, resort benefits, crowd patterns, and which attractions fit your family best.

That's why I love helping clients plan these trips.

Because I've made mistakes.

I've learned the lessons.

And I would much rather help you avoid the stress than have you discover these things the hard way.

Final Thoughts

Universal Orlando is one of my favorite destinations because it offers excitement, incredible storytelling, amazing resorts, and memories that families talk about long after they return home.

But like any great vacation, the experience is so much better when you know what to expect.

And if I could go back and tell first-time Amy one thing, it would be this:

Slow down.

Don't try to do everything.Enjoy the moments in between.

Because those are often the memories you'll treasure the most.
