Is Universal Studios’ new Epic Universe a great place for families

Until recently, Universal Studios Florida consisted of three separate parks – Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure and Volcano Bay water park.  That all changed in May of 2025 with the opening of their new park, Epic Universe.  To say this new park is “Epic” might be a poor pun, but this park really is amazing.  To be honest, in the eyes of many, Universal Studios Florida has the reputation of not being “family friendly” amongst families with younger children.  So, how does Epic Universe fare in that regard?  Let’s dive into that a little deeper.

Epic Universe consists of five different immersive worlds, Celestial Park, Super Nintendo, Dark Universe, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic.  Each world is entered through an amazing portal that immediately makes the world feel like its own standalone park.  This immersive effect is quite powerful.

The specific theme of each of these worlds includes an automatic generational connection that makes this park perfect for families.  Ok, what does that mean?  Here is what I mean.  I grew up playing Nintendo games with my kids and now I play them with my grandkids, and I watch my kids play them with their children.  I have read all the Harry Potter books and seen all the movies and so have my children.  And now, my grandchildren are getting to the age where they are reading the books and watching the movies as well.  What families have not watched the “How To Train Your Dragon” movies together.  Most families, right?  And, regarding Dark Universe, what generation does not love a scary monster.  This is what I mean by a natural family connection – it allows families to experience attractions and activities in areas they already have in common.  Let’s take a quick peek at each of the individual worlds.

Celestial Park

This world acts as the central pub in the park, with the other four worlds located around this hub.  The children in your party will immediately be drawn to Constellation Carousel.  This attraction has characters shaped like many different animals that soar and spin through the constellations accompanied by music and a light show.  The interactive play area, Astronomica, is sure to be a hit as it offers kids the chance to enjoy interactive water play and several sensory experiences.  The other major attraction located in this world, Stardust Racers, is best for older children as the minimum height required to experience this attraction is 48”.  This dual launch roller coaster reaches speeds of close to 60 MPH and is not for the faint of heart.

Super Nintendo

This land is loaded with interactive activities for the kids – things like question mark boxes and bricks that guests can interact with.  Or, how about using your own individual power up band to interact with even more fun adventures?  This world has three major attractions.  Yoshi’s Adventure will appeal to the youngest children as they ride miniature Yoshi cars through Mushroom Kingdom in search of magic glowing eggs.  Both Mario Kart Bowser’s Challenge and Mine Cart Madness may appeal more to the older kids, but they are both suitable for younger children as well.  The first is a virtual reality ride that allows guests to compete with Team Bowser on Mario Cart courses.  Mine Cart Madness is a family- friendly roller coaster.  One thing to note – it may be easy for kids to have sensory overload as this world has little open space and a number of moving features happening all at once.

Dark Universe

This is the one world where it will be important for each family to consider how their child handles the “scare factor,” especially on the world’s major attraction – Monsters Unchained.  This attraction may be a little scary for the younger children, but the animatronics and special effects are amazing.  A big draw in this land for the children will be the Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience where participants are transformed into werewolves, vampires, and more with makeup, apparel, and accessories.  The world’s other major attraction, Curse of the Werewolf, is a roller coaster thrill ride.  Note – this ride does have a 40” height requirement.

How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

The biggest draw in this world for children will certainly be the opportunity to meet characters like Hiccup, Toothless, Astrid, Stormfly, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut, all the main characters from this movie franchise.  Or, how about a live stage show featuring dragons?  The Viking Training Camp is an amazing play where children can burn off energy while enjoying interactive games, slides, and obstacle courses.  This world has three major attractions.  First is Hiccup’s Wing Gliders which is a family-friendly roller coaster.  Second is Dragon Racer’s Rally which is a spinning ride where participants race dragons.  This attraction does have a 48” height requirement.  Last but certainly not least, the world’s water ride, Fyre Drill, is a blast for the entire family as riders shoot water cannons.  Note – you will get wet.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic

Saving my favorite world for last, this world simply is amazing.  The theming is so detailed and immersive, you will feel like you have been dropped right into the movie set.  The sheer awe guests feel when they enter the Ministry of Magic through the magical floos is hard to put into words and they have done an amazing job of maximizing the element of surprise as you enter this structure.  Quite simply, you must see it yourself and the appeal will be the same across all age groups.  The world’s major attraction, Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, may be a little too intense for younger children so just be aware.  One of the highlights of this world is the theatrical show, Le Cirque Aranus, featuring fantastic beasts that are brought to life through special effects and puppetry.  This world also features interactive wand locations where children and adults alike can create their own magic and cast spells.  The unique shops and live performers also add to the immersive experience.

In summary, the vast array of experiences and attractions that will be enjoyed by guests of all ages make Epic Universe a great park for families.  Yes, certain attractions have height requirements, and some attractions may be a little intense for younger children, but every family knows their children best.  Hopefully, the preceding paragraphs have helped you gain a better understanding of what is right for your family.
