10 Things I Wish I Knew Before Visiting SeaWorld Orlando
When people think about an Orlando vacation, SeaWorld isn't always at the top of the list. But after visiting, I realized there are quite a few things I wish someone had told me beforehand!
SeaWorld is so much more than animal shows and aquariums. It's a full theme park with thrilling roller coasters, family attractions, great food, seasonal events, and some pretty unique experiences. And if you look beyond the main park, SeaWorld can actually become a much bigger part of your Orlando vacation.
Here are 10 things I wish I knew before visiting SeaWorld Orlando:
1. SeaWorld is WAY more than animals.
I'll admit it: before visiting, I mostly thought of SeaWorld as an animal park. I was wrong! SeaWorld has some seriously impressive roller coasters, including Mako, which is one of the park's signature thrill rides, along with plenty of other rides for families and younger guests. There are also live shows, Sesame Street Land, animal encounters, seasonal events and more. If you have teens, adults or anyone in your group who loves thrill rides, don't automatically write SeaWorld off as a "kids' animal park." There is something here for just about everyone.
2. You can make SeaWorld an entire vacation — not just a one-day park visit.
This may be the biggest thing I wish I knew. SeaWorld is part of a larger family of parks that includes SeaWorld Orlando, Aquatica Orlando and Discovery Cove.
Aquatica is a full water park with slides, pools, lazy-river-style attractions and plenty of ways to spend an entire day cooling off in the Florida heat. And then there's Discovery Cove, which is a completely different experience. It's an all-inclusive day resort where you can snorkel, interact with marine life, enjoy meals and snacks, and simply relax. So instead of thinking, "Should we add SeaWorld for one day?" I often recommend thinking about whether a SeaWorld vacation package makes sense for your entire stay.
3. Discovery Cove is a SPLURGE — but it's a very different kind of day.
If your family wants something relaxing mixed into an Orlando vacation, Discovery Cove is worth knowing about. Unlike a traditional theme park day, Discovery Cove is designed to be much more of an all-inclusive resort experience. Your day includes breakfast, lunch, snacks and beverages, plus experiences like snorkeling and animal encounters.
It's also a great way to build a "rest day" into an Orlando itinerary without simply sitting at the hotel pool all day. For some families, this ends up being one of their favorite days of the entire trip.
4. The All-Day Dining Deal can be a REALLY good option.
This is one of the add-ons I would absolutely have your travel advisor price out for you.
SeaWorld's All-Day Dining Deal allows you to get a meal or food option at participating restaurants once every 90 minutes throughout the day. Adult plans currently include an entrée, a side or dessert, and a non-alcoholic beverage each time you redeem it. For a family that plans to spend most of the day in the park, this can be a great way to make food one less thing to worry about. And let's be honest — Florida heat + walking + roller coasters = everyone gets hungry!
Travel advisor tip: I wouldn't automatically add it to every reservation. It makes the most sense for families who will be in the park for a good portion of the day and will actually take advantage of the multiple dining opportunities.
5. Don't assume every dining experience is included in the dining plan.
This is an important one! The All-Day Dining Deal is great, but it doesn't mean every restaurant or special dining experience is included. Specialty experiences such as Dine with Orcas and Sharks Underwater Grill are separate. So, if you have your heart set on a particular dining experience, make sure you know what's included before you arrive. And if you're interested in one of the more unique dining experiences, plan ahead rather than waiting until the day of your visit.
6. Don't skip the animal experiences just because you're there for the rides.
If you're a coaster person, it's easy to make a beeline for the big rides and completely miss what makes SeaWorld different from other theme parks. Take some time to see the animals! SeaWorld offers opportunities to see dolphins, penguins, sharks, orcas and other marine life, along with additional animal experiences and tours. That's really where SeaWorld shines — you get the combination of a theme park and an animal-focused experience in the same place.
7. Look at the park schedule BEFORE you go.
This is a big practical tip. SeaWorld isn't just rides. There are shows, animal presentations, seasonal events and other entertainment happening throughout the day. If you arrive without looking at the schedule, you could easily spend your morning riding coasters and then realize you missed a show or experience you really wanted to see. SeaWorld recommends checking park hours, showtimes and special events when planning your day, and the SeaWorld app can also show real-time attraction wait times and help you navigate the park.
My advice: Don't plan every minute, but have a general idea of the things you absolutely don't want to miss.
8. There are some great add-ons beyond the basic park ticket.
One of the things I love about planning SeaWorld vacations is that you can customize the experience. Depending on the trip, you can look at options such as Quick Queue, reserved seating, animal experiences, specialty dining, photo packages and other upgrades. Not everyone needs every add-on — and that's exactly why I like having a travel advisor help build the package. Some families will get much more value from dining. Others may care more about rides and want a skip-the-line option. And some will want the full animal experience.
9. You don't necessarily have to stay somewhere completely different from the Disney/Universal part of your trip.
If you're already planning an Orlando vacation, SeaWorld doesn't have to be an "either/or." You can absolutely build SeaWorld into a larger Orlando vacation.
For example:
Disney + SeaWorld
Universal + SeaWorld
Disney + Universal + SeaWorld
Or you could make SeaWorld and its sister parks the main focus of your trip. SeaWorld currently offers hotel packages that can include accommodations, park admission, parking, reserved show seating and other perks, and some packages allow you to add additional parks such as Aquatica. That's why I always recommend looking at the whole vacation package, rather than pricing each park individually and assuming that's automatically the best deal.
10. Give yourself more time than you think you need.
My biggest piece of advice? Don't try to rush through SeaWorld. If you only have one day, you can absolutely have a great time. But if you're interested in the rides, animal experiences, shows, dining and seasonal entertainment, there is plenty to fill your day.
And if you're adding Aquatica or Discovery Cove, suddenly SeaWorld isn't just a one-day addition — it can become multiple days of your Orlando vacation. That's when I think SeaWorld really becomes interesting for families who have already done Disney or Universal and want to experience something a little different.
So… should you add SeaWorld to your Orlando vacation? Maybe! And that's exactly why I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all answer. For some families, SeaWorld is the perfect one-day park. For others, the better option might be a SeaWorld + Aquatica combination. And for families looking for a more relaxing, upscale experience, Discovery Cove could be the perfect addition. There are also hotel packages and add-ons that can make it possible to bundle more of the experience together instead of purchasing everything separately.
The biggest thing I wish I knew before visiting SeaWorld?
I wish I had realized sooner that SeaWorld isn't just another theme park to squeeze into an Orlando vacation. It can be its own vacation experience. And that's where having a travel advisor can really help.
